Running of the Boots 2005
Once again, Sitkans pulled on their boots and ran wild through Lincoln St. last Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005. This is Southeast Alaska's answer to Spain's "Running of the Bulls". But unlike the Pamplona spectacle, the greatest hazard in the "Running of the Boots" is being run over by an oncoming herd of Sitkans wearing rubber boots and the zaniest costumes. This is definitely not a race for speed, though there is a prize for the fastest boots, along with several other categories.
This year's Running of the Boots was generously supported by Norcross Safety Products, LLC, makers of the excellent XTRATUF line of waterproof neoprene work boots. In 2003, NSP created a model of XTRATUF boot called the Sitka, specially dubbed for Sitka, Alaska, home of some of the staunchest supporters of the XTRATUF line. Check out the official XTRATUF website for excerpts from an hour-long radio showthat was broadcast on KCAW "Raven Radio", dedicated to the popular XTRATUF boots.
Fun-loving Sitkans, kids and adults alike, join us each year in celebrating the coming home of the salmon to spawn and the end of the summer season by running from the Crescent Harbor parking lot down Lincoln St. around St. Michael's Cathedral and back to the Crescent Harbor Shelter for the lipsync contest that follows.
